BMW Roundel: The Complete Guide
The BMW Roundel (or Emblem) on your vehicle represents a rich legacy and a pride for the Ultimate Driving Machine.
Whether you are looking to upgrade your existing BMW Roundel, or wish to set your BMW apart with a uniquely restyled BMW emblem, we have just the solution for you.
A Brief History of the BMW Roundel
Bayerische Motoren Werke, or Bavarian Motor Works, was established in Munich, Germany in 1916. Originally, BMW made only airplanes. For nearly a century, it was explained that the BMW logo represents a white propeller against a blue sky.
After the first World War, BMW was forced to cease production of aircrafts by the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company then switched not to automobile production, but to the design and manufacturing of motorcycles. BMW Motorcycles (known as “Beemers”) remain some of the finest on the market, and bear the BMW Roundel with pride as the original BMW consumer vehicle. Only later would BMW begin building the legendary sports luxury sedans and coupes that bear it’s Emblem today, but the propeller logo and “BMW” lettering have remained relatively unchanged, maturing and changing in style very gradually over the last century.
Recently, it came to light that the BMW Emblem was based more on the Bavarian Flag than on BMW’s legacy of aircraft production. Though this may or may be an attempt to cover up BMW’s involvement in the Nazi party, it is worth noting that the BMW roundel does indeed embody the two colors of the Bavarian flag.
Why Replace Your BMW Roundel
First and foremost, your BMW Roundel is front-and-center when you drive, and therefore often chips or dents from rocks and freeway debris. Once this happens, the entire roundel can easily peel, leaving the chrome beneath to shine in the sun. This is common, but can be frustrating, as it is so blatantly noticeable. An aftermarket logo can be more affordable than a replacement BMW emblem from the dealership, while still maintaining the original fit and finish of an OE part.
Furthermore, when customizing your BMW, you may have chosen to go with a carbon fiber theme, or to “blackout” your car’s amber and red lights, creating a unique monochromatic look. For this reason, it may be appropriate to change the color of your BMW emblem. While some view this as adulterating a classic and prestigious crest, the vast majority see it as an intriguing metaphor; The modified BMW logo represents the aftermarket upgrades you’ve installed on your BMW.
